Alcoholic chronic pancreatitis

Definition

Alcohol-related chronic pancreatitis (CP) is the most common subtype of chronic pancreatitis. Almost 50% of chronic pancreatitis cases are attributable to alcohol abuse (Majumder and Chari 2016). Commonly, this subtype becomes clinically apparent with recurrent acute pancreatitis (Braganza et al. 2011; Klöppel 2007; Pham and Forsmark 2018). Characteristically, intraductal protein plugs and calculi are observed (Braganza et al. 2011; Esposito et al. 2020; Steer et al. 1995). In advanced stages, the gland shows a diffuse fibrosis (Braganza et al. 2011; Esposito et al. 2020; Klöppel 2007). As a result of destruction of the exocrine and endocrine parenchyma, steatorrhea and diabetes mellitus type 3c develop (Esposito et al. 2020; Majumder and Chari 2016; Klöppel 2007; Steer et al. 1995).
