Definition

Annular pancreas is a rare congenital malformation consisting of pancreatic tissue forming a ring around the descending portion of the duodenum due to an incomplete rotation of the ventral pancreatic bud. Complete and incomplete annular pancreas exist.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    Annular pancreas occurs in 1:12,000–15,000 of the general population (Hulvat et al. 2006).

    The annual incidence is estimated at around 1/50,000 births, representing 10% of all cases of duodenal stenosis (Bargy 2019).

  • Age

    Annular pancreas is a congenital condition. The mean age of diagnosis in children is 1 day. In children, annular pancreas is associated with trisomy 21 and other congenital diseases such as Meckel’s diverticulum, intestinal, or cardiac malformations. In adults, annular pancreas is mostly diagnosed in patients aged 30–60 years (mean age of diagnosis in adults: 47 years) (Zyromski et al. 2008), and it has been described in association with chronic...
