Synonyms

Teutschlander disease, lipocalcinogranulomatosis, tumoral lipocalcinosis, lipocalcinogranulomatous bursitis, calcified bursae, calcifying collagenolysis, calcifying pseudotumor, and hipstone (Czerniak 2016; Bertoni et al. 1990).

Definition

A clinicopathologic entity characterized by a tumor-like deposition of calcium without an obvious associated metabolic calcium disorder.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    Very rare with more prevalence in Africans and African-Americans ethnic groups (Czerniak 2016).

  • Age

    It typically occurs in healthy children, adolescents, and young adults.

  • Sex

    No sex predilection is apparently reported (Bertoni et al. 1990; Olsen and Chew 2006).

  • Site

    Periarticular soft tissue in the vicinity of major joints, such as hips, shoulders, knees, and posterior elbows, rare cases localized in the spine, in the hands and feet, and in the temporomandibular joint has been reported (Czerniak 2016; Bertoni et al. 1990; Olsen and Chew 2006).
