Definition

Proliferations of myofibroblastic cells, occurring in the dorsal aspect of the phalangeal joints.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    They are uncommon lesions, frequently associated with palmar and/or plantar fibromatosis (Fetsch et al. 2005). Pachydermodactyly is an uncommon acquired form of digital fibromatosis affecting adolescent boys (Prieto et al. 2011). Knuckle pads can occur in the contest of Bart-Pumphrey syndrome, an autosomal dominant disease associated with missense mutations in the GJB2 gene and characterized by knuckle pads, sensorineural hearing loss, palmoplantar keratoacanthoma, and leukonychia (Richard et al. 2004).

  • Age

    The lesion generally affects adult patients, in the forth to sixth decades of life.

  • Sex

    Men are more frequently affected.

  • Site

    The lesions occur in the dorsal aspect over the extensor surface of the interphalangeal or metacarpophalangeal joints (Goldblum et al. 2014).
