Definition

Urothelial papilloma is a benign exophytic neoplasm, characterized by a central delicate fibrovascular core lined by urothelium with normal cytology and thickness.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

    Following the restrictive diagnostic criteria recommended by the WHO classification, urothelial papilloma represents less than 4% of papillary urothelial neoplasm (Reuter et al. 2016). Risk factors are similar to those of urothelial neoplasm, such as cigarette smoking and occupational exposure to aromatic amines.

  • Age

    It occurs in patients less than 50 years of age (mainly in young adults and children).

  • Sex

    The male to female ratio is 2:1 (Magi-Galluzzi and Epstein 2004).

  • Site

    Most tumors are located at the trigone, close to the ureteric orifices

  • Treatment

    The most common symptom is hematuria. Transurethral resection is both diagnostic and therapeutic.
