Definition
Invasive carcinoma with neuroendocrine (NE) differentiation presents microscopic features similar to NE neoplasms of other organs.
Bussolati and Badve (2012) classifies invasive carcinomas with NE differentiation into three subtypes: well-differentiated NE tumors, poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas/small cell carcinomas, and invasive carcinomas with NE differentiation.
Clinical Features
Incidence: Invasive breast carcinomas with NE features are rare and represent less than 5% of the breast cancers (Wang et al. 2014).
Age: Most patients are in the sixth or seventh decades of life.
Sex: There is a female predilection. Single case reports of invasive breast carcinomas with NE features in male patients were occasionally described.
Site: Usually, invasive breast carcinomas with NE differentiation present unilaterally, nevertheless a single case report with bilateral primary breast NE carcinoma in a young...
