International Classification of Diseases 11th Edition (ICD-11)

Abstract

The International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 11th edition (ICD-11) is currently being developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). This article focused on the revision of the ICD chapter of mental and behavioral disorders and compares it to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). The main objective of the revision of this chapter was to increase clinical utility and global applicability to reduce the global burden of mental disorders across various settings. It followed several stages: dissemination of international professional surveys and formative field studies, case-controlled field studies relying on experimental methods to assess proposed classification guidelines, and the ecological implementation of the field studies of clinical utility across various sites. The proposed changes are scheduled to be presented to the World Health Assembly in 2018.
