Definition

Bipolar mood disorders are defined by highs and lows of mood, energy, and behavior.

Introduction

Bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs) are a group of psychiatric disorders ranked as the sixth leading cause of disability in the world among people between 15 and 44 years old (World Health Organization 2006). They are associated with serious personal, social, and economic costs. According to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association 2013), BSDs include three diagnoses on a continuum of severity: bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, and cyclothymic disorder, with bipolar I disorder being the most severe and cyclothymic disorder the least severe. All three diagnoses cause functional impairment or significant distress and involve recurrent unusual shifts in mood, energy, and activity.
