Early Life and Educational Background

Professor Zautra was born in Hartford, CT, in 1947, attended high school at Loomis Institute in Windsor CT, graduating in 1965. He then attended Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, from 1965 to 1969, receiving a BA in psychology. He received graduate training in clinical psychology at the University of Utah from 1969 to 1975, where he received his Ph.D., and postdoctoral training in industrial mental health at the Department of Management from 1975 to 1976. He also completed postdoctoral training in psychiatric epidemiology at Columbia University in 1981–1982. His training in these fields of inquiry has been guided by prominent scholars and innovators in their respective disciplines: Professor Bruce Dohrenwend, at Columbia University in public health, Professor Fredrick Herzberg at the University of Utah in management, and Professor Ernst Beier, also at the University of Utah in clinical psychology.
