Early Life and Educational Background

Campbell was born April 26, 1966 in Santa Monica, CA. He grew up in Laguna Beach, CA, and attended Harbor Day School in Corona del Mar, CA. At age 14 he left to attend Phillips Academy in Andover, MA as a boarding student. He graduated in 1984. That same year he enrolled at U.C. Berkeley where he was a wholly undistinguished student. Highlights included taking courses from Jack Block, Alan Dundes, and James Jarrett. He saw Jerry Garcia and John Kahn play an acoustic set at Wolfgang’s in 1985 where Ripple turned into a sing along and surfed one perfect day in Ocean Beach, San Francisco. He graduated in 1988.

In 1988, Campbell pursued a master’s degree at San Diego State University (SDSU) under the outstanding direction of Georg Matt. Campbell’s focus was in clinical psychology, with an emphasis on mood and memory. This is where Campbell learned the basics of research design and meta-analysis.
