John Walter Thibaut, Ph.D. (1917–1986) was a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, for nearly 30 years. He was an American social psychologist with research in the areas of social psychology; social and political philosophy; social issues, including the negotiation of loyalty and fairness in procedures for conflict resolution; the assessment of social exchange processes using rewards, costs, expectations, and outcomes; and intergroup processes, including status, power, and interdependency in dyads and groups. Thibaut died at the age of 68 from lung cancer and was survived by his wife, Ann, and children, Constantia and Charles.
