Exostosis
Definition
Tori are common irregular bony outgrowths at the outer surface of the jaw and hard palate.
Clinical Features
Incidence
Data on the prevalence of occurrence of the tori vary from 12 % to 27 %.
Age
Tori tend to appear more frequently during middle age of life.
Sex
The torus palatinus is more commonly observed in females, but this is not the case with the torus mandibularis.
Site
The buccal and lingual surface of upper as well as lower jawbone may be involved as well as the midline of the palate.
Treatment
Treatment is not necessary unless in case of mechanical problems when wearing dentures.
Radiologic Features
Tori present as ill-defined cloudy radiopacities.
Macroscopy
There are no specific gross features.
Microscopic Findings
Tori consist of lamellar bone.
Differential Diagnosis
Characteristic clinical appearance precludes any differential diagnostic problem.
