Definition

Unicystic ameloblastoma is an uncommon variant of ameloblastoma. It exhibits several distinctive clinicopathologic features that separate it from conventional ameloblastoma, including a predilection for relatively young individuals, typically unilocular radiographic appearance, macroscopically cystic architecture, and often favorable response to conservative treatment. The unicystic ameloblastoma was first described by Robinson and Martinez, who reported a series of cystic lesions with ameloblastic epithelial lining but less aggressive clinical behavior compared to conventional solid and multicystic ameloblastoma (Robinson and Martinez 1977). These authors proposed that the lesions may have developed de novo, by neoplastic transformation of nonneoplastic odontogenic cyst lining or by cystic degeneration of a previously solid ameloblastoma.
