Definition

The glandular odontogenic cyst is a developmental cyst of odontogenic origin that shows glandular (i.e., salivary) differentiation. It is the most recently recognized type of odontogenic cyst, first being reported in 1987.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

The glandular odontogenic cyst is a rare entity that represents only 0.2 % of all odontogenic cysts.

  • Age

In their 2008 literature review, Kaplan and associates found that most cases occurred in young and middle-aged adults, with a mean age of 45.7 years. Fowler and colleagues reported a mean age of 51 years in their large series of 46 cases, with an age range of 20-86 years. No cases were reported during the first decade of life.

  • Sex

The glandular odontogenic cyst showed a slight male predominance in the literature review by Kaplan and associates, with 57 % of cases reported in men and 43 % in women. However, no sex predilection was noted in the series reported by Fowler and colleagues.
