Key Information
The Third Convention refers to a schismatic group of Mexican Latter-day Saints in Central Mexico who disagreed with decisions made by Church leadership in Salt Lake City regarding issues related to church administration and race, and separated from the main body of the Church between 1936 and 1946 due to these concerns. The Third Convention was a unique moment in LDS history due to the large number of members, called Conventionalists, who had left the Church and the success in the vast majority of these individuals later reuniting with the main body of the Church.
Several notable events led up to this schism in the Church. Isolation of the Church in Mexico from the main body of LDS leadership based in the United States and the Mormon Mexican Colonies resulted in a sense of exclusion among native Mexican members in Central Mexico (Tullis 1998).
