Definition

Honduras is a land that stood at the center of Mayan civilization. After a protracted conquest by the Spanish, the Catholic Church sought to eliminate Mayan religion, but managed instead to drive it underground. The Catholic Church established a religious dominance that lasted until Liberal governments of an independent Honduras stripped that Church of its rights and privileges. Protestants established their first missions in English-speaking, British protectorates along the Caribbean coast. Protestant churches grew from there, especially in the latter half of the twentieth century, to the point that the country possesses a highly plural Christian religious makeup.
