Definition
Religion in Argentina has not diminished. Secularization trends did not work out in Europe or the United States. However, Argentina’s religious sphere has been transformed without disappearing. Religion plays a role in the public sphere, but religious authorities do not monopolize religious perspectives any more. The current situation shows a predominantly Catholic population, with a growing presence of Pentecostals and those who are non-affiliated but not necessarily non-believers.
Introduction
Argentina’s religious landscape became globally significant on March 13, 2013, when the Argentinian Jorge Bergoglio was elected Pope Francis. This triggered new interest in Argentina’s religious landscape. What does it look like? What are its tensions and dynamics?
