Bakan– Russian transport vessel that protected Russian northern fisheries near the coasts of the White Sea and Murmansk. It was built at Nevsky Shipbuilding Plant in St. Petersburg in 1896. Deadweight – 885 tons. Length – 50.3 m, width – 10.9 m, ammunition – two 47 mm and 37 mm guns. Team – 9 officers and 60 enlisted men. The vessel was cruising within 3 miles (5.5 km) along the European coasts of Russia – from its borders with Norway to the ices of the Kara Sea and the entire aquatories of the Barents and White Seas to the south of the Kanin Nos Cape and the Svyatoy Nos Cape. In 1900–1902, B. was at disposal of the expedition of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the grade measurement and exploration of Spitsbergen. In 1909, it was transferred to the class of dispatch vessels. In 1913, it participated in the data search operations on expeditions of G.Ya. Sedov and V.A. Rusanov. B. happened to be the only dispatch vessel of the Russian Navy that served in the north of the country....
