Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) – belongs to the Federal Service of Hydrometeology and Environment Monitoring (RosHydroMet), located in St. Petersburg, and is the only Russian research institute dealing with the complex research of the polar regions of Earth. The history of the AARI has begun in 1920 when the Scientific and Technical Society of the Supreme Council of National Economy has launched the North scientific-commercial expedition. In 1925, it became the North Research Institute, then in 1930 – All-Union Arctic Institute, in 1936 it was the Arctic Research Institute (ARI), and since 1958 has its present name. From 1932, the institute switched to the Northern Sea Route Authority of the Council of People’s Commissars and became the major research institutions of it. The AARI primary objective is the complex research of the Arctic Sea for the purposes of the Northern Sea Route.
