Anufriev, Ivan Petrovich (1868–1937) – was a master mariner and researcher of the Arctic. Since he was 10, he voyaged on sailing and steam ships as a cabin boy, cook, and sailor. After graduating from the Navigation School in Arkhangelsk, he served as captain and navigation officer. In 1902–1908, A. led the rescue boat on the Murmansk coast. In 1909, he became the captain of the first icebreaker in the North Nikolay, on which he went for several winter voyages to the Kara Sea, proving their possibility. He explored the Novaya Zemlya Islands and revised maps. In 1914 A. had become the captain of the expedition vessel Gerta (belonged to the Chief Hydrographic Department), which was sent for the search mission of the Yakov Sedov’s expedition.
