Aleksandrovsk-na-Murmane – is a city and a port in the Arkhangelsk Province on the south bank of the nonfreezing Ekaterininskaya Harbor within 10 km from the Barents Sea entry. It was established in 1896 under the will of the Emperor of Russia Alexander III and was named after him. From 1899 to 1916, the city served as a district center. The port was well equipped and served as a starting point for expeditions under command of Eduard V. Toll, Georgy L. Brusilov, Vladimir A. Rusanov, and many others. The Murmansk Biological Station had been based in A. from 1898 to 1929. In 1916, the district center was moved due to the railway building to the eastern bank of the Kola Peninsula, where Murmansk was founded. Since 1939 it is named Polyarnyi. Today this is a military base of the Northern Fleet of Russian Navy. City of Military Glory (2008).
