Abruzzi, Luigi Amedeo, the Duke of Abruzzi (1873–1933) – is an Italian military mariner, mountaineer, and explorer of the Arctic. He was the son of the King of Spain. In 1897, he climbed the Mount Saint Elias in Alaska (5498 m). In 1899, A. went to the North Pole on a steam whaler “Stella Polare.” After wintering in 1900 on the Franz Josef Land, captain Umberto Cagni with three companions (without A. who frostbit his arm) reached latitude 86°34′N, setting a new record. However, they had found no traces of the Peterman and the King Oscar Lands, which were on maps of that time. The Luigi Island in the Franz Josef Land Archipelago was named after A.
