Definition

Self-esteem can be divided into two types: personal and relational. Personal self-esteem is influenced by personal characteristics (i.e., skills or talent), whereas relational, or social, self-esteem is influenced by how others view us and how well we interact with others (Du et al. 2016). Social competence, sometimes referred to as social skills or social self-efficacy, refers to one’s ability to initiate, reciprocate, and maintain healthy relationships (Williams and Galliher 2006). The Texas Social Behavior Inventory (TSBI) was developed as an objective measure of social self-esteem and social competence (Helmreich and Stapp 1974).

The TSBI is a 32-item, 5-point Likert scale rated from (a) not at all characteristic of me to (e) very characteristic of me.
