Introduction

Laurie Chassin is Regents Professor of Psychology at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. She is a clinical psychologist who conducts research on the development of substance use (particularly alcohol and tobacco use) and substance use disorders, and the pathways by which substance use disorders are passed down across generations.

Early Life and Educational Background

Dr. Chassin was born on February 2, 1950 in New York City. She earned her B.A. in Psychology in 1971 from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University under the direction of Dr. Gerald Weinberger in 1977. She completed postdoctoral training in the Department of Sociology at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana in an interdisciplinary program in the self and mental health funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.
