Rodolfo Mendoza-Dentonwas born in Mexico City, Mexico, on August 28, 1970, where he lived until he was 10 years old. In 1980, his father joined UNICEF as an auditor for the West Africa region; the “home station” for families was Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Mendoza-Denton moved with his family there in 1981 and completed 4 years of school at the International Community School of Abidjan. Mendoza-Denton completed high school at the Gunnery, a boarding school in Washington, Connecticut. In 1988, his family was transferred to Bangkok, Thailand, where Mendoza-Denton subsequently spent summers teaching English. He attended Yale University as an undergraduate. He took a year off to teach English in his native Mexico in 1991 and graduated from college in 1993. He then pursued a Ph.D. in social psychology at Columbia University under the mentorship of Walter Mischel and Geraldine Downey.
