Abstract

Encouragement is one of the key concepts of Adlerian theory. It emphasizes the worth and dignity of every human being and has an optimistic outlook affirming that individuals are able to create, decide, and take action for change. Encouragement is often misunderstood as an Adlerian therapy technique or intervention. Encouragement is not a technique but rather a way of being with others that includes both attitudinal and relationship-building skills. This entry explains both theoretical and practice understandings of Adlerian encouragement.
