Definition

Set of contents and meanings which are reached after the analysis and interpretation of the manifest dream content (the dream as it occurs in the dream recall upon awakening). The latent content of the dream is the real dream, its full version, and contains, among other things, one or more unconscious wishes, which are the driving force for the triggering and production of the dream.

Introduction

In the Freudian theory, the latent content of the dream is the real dream and represents the psychic material at the base of it. It is opposed to the manifest content which is just a misleading and deformed facade of the latent material of the dream. The latent content is composed mostly of unconscious wishes, of morally/ethically reprehensible nature, that urge for gratification and represent the motivational trigger and the driving force of the dream.
