Definition
Work-family conflict is defined as a form of role conflict, in which the demands of work and family are deemed to be mutually incompatible, so that participation in one domain necessarily leads to conflict in the other (Greenhaus and Beutell 1985; Voydanoff 1988). Work-family conflict occurs at the intersection between one’s paid employment and one’s private life; this intersection is also known as the work-life interface or the work-life nexus (Greenhaus and Allen 2011). The concept of work-family conflict is bidirectional. Work can interfere with family, resulting in work-to-family conflict, and family can also interfere with work, resulting in family-to-work conflict (Mesmer-Magnus and Viswesvaran 2005; Greenhaus and Allen 2011).
