Definition
This entry focuses on gender-based violence committed against women and girls by men, as this tends to be the more pervasive form of gendered abuse throughout the world. Although it is a complex issue, women and girls often experience violence and suffer its consequences differently than men. Gender-based violence and abuse can take many forms, and all serve to deprive women of their basic human rights via physical force or threatening or intimidating behaviors. Examples of gender-based violence and abuse include: emotional and psychological abuse; physical assault; rape, including in marriage or common-law relationships; verbal harassment or uttering threats; and economic abuse when an abuser prevents a victim from having a paid job or access to financial resources....
