Reporters Without Borders [Reporters Sans Frontieres] (RSF) is the world’s biggest NGO specializing in the defense of media freedom, which we regard as the basic human right to be informed and to inform others. (Reporters Without Borders 2019)
Description
Reporters Without Borders was established in Montpellier, France, in 1985. Today, it is a “network of correspondents in 130 countries” with a headquarters in Paris. Among its most notable functions, RSF:
“Provides information about the media freedom situation worldwide in French, English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and other languages.”
“Issues press releases every day about abuses against journalists and … censorship.”
Annually produces the Press Freedom Index.
Produces ad hoc special reports on particular issues.
Mobilizes “public and government support” with “protests and awareness campaigns.”
Organizes activities to free journalist hostages anywhere in the world.
