Introduction

Fate was one of the most controversial terms of the Early Modern Period. Unlike both now and in antiquity, from the early seventeenth century onward, the concept of fate referred neither to a (divine) entity nor an individual’s life course, but denoted instead a global structural principle that embodied the causal relation of things. The concept of fate meant the necessary and irrevocable predetermination of all events and, with it, the impossibility of chance, the determination of human beings, and, ultimately, the fact that God was not free in his decisions. In the transition from Renaissance, Baroque to Enlightenment, fate marked the locus of disputes about the mutual compatibility of religious belief and rational knowledge.
