Abstract

Demands for the improvement of functionality, performance, design, and safety of automobile windows are increasing. In this context, multicomponent colored coatings for dark tinted windows and inorganic–organic hybrid water-repellent coatings have been prepared on glass substrates by wet chemical sol–gel process. In the former, the gray-colored, multicomponent, double-layered coatings based on Cu–Mn–Cu–Cr–O spinel as a pigment in the matrix are useful for shielding ultraviolet as well as infrared rays and maintaining the privacy of inner room. The water-repellent coatings applied to the surface of windshield of automobiles repel and readily move away rain drops by an interaction with the wind pressure during running. Fluoroalkyl isocyanate silane applied on the surface of glass forms monomolecular film, generating siloxane bonding on the surface of the substrate glass at room temperature. These coatings have contact angles above 100° and sliding angles below 15°.
