Abstract

Sol-gel processing of thin films that are not silica-based requires attention to the high reactivity of alkoxides such as those of titanium, tantalum, and niobium. For example, titanium tetraisopropoxide is easier to control in solutions containing polyethylene glycol (PEG), which leads to a variety of useful morphologies and microstructures in titania thin films. Another example is the ferroelectric perovskite thin films, such as strontium bismuth tantalate (SBT) and strontium bismuth niobate (SBN), which are prepared using double alkoxides.
