John S. Visher, MD (1921–2009)

Introduction

John Visher, along with his wife Emily, was one of the pioneers of family therapy in contemporary practice due to his contributions to the field in the area of stepfamilies. Their innovative work shed light on the distinctive experiences of stepfamilies and developed best practices for clinicians when working with them. The Vishers founded the Stepfamily Association of America (SAA), authored seven books, and published many papers in professional journals (Visher 1994; Visher and Visher, 1979, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991a, b, 1996).

Career

Visher was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and raised in Evansville, Indiana. He received his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University at Bloomington and went on to earn his medical degree from Indiana University at Indianapolis. He served as a US Army and Air Force medical officer from 1945 to 1947 and was discharged with the rank of captain. In 1951, he completed his psychiatric training at the University...
