Emily B. Visher, Ph.D. (1918–2001)

Introduction

Emily Browning Visher, along with her husband John, was one of the foremost pioneers of therapy with stepfamilies. Prior to their innovative work, the field gave little consideration to the unique loyalties, needs, challenges, and relationships that develop within stepfamilies, and there was no specific clinical model dedicated to their treatment. The Vishers founded the Stepfamily Association of America (SAA), authored seven books, and published numerous papers in professional journals (Visher and Visher 1979, 1988, 1989 1991a, b, 1996).

Career

Visher was born in Norwich, Connecticut, and raised in Britannia Beach, British Columbia. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Wellesley College in 1940. Visher returned to school funded by in part by grant from the American Association of University Women, receiving her Doctorate in Psychology from UC Berkeley in 1958.
