Intercultural Couples and Families in Couple and Family Therapy

Introduction

In the past four decades, social demographics have shifted dramatically in the United States, Canada, and Europe, and the trend toward marrying persons outside one’s own ethnic or racial group is on the rise (Karis and Killian 2008; U.S. Census Bureau 2010). The era of globalization, instantaneous communication technologies, and high-speed travel herald significantly increases in movement across national, cultural, and racial borders, with increasing numbers of people leaving their motherlands and neighborhood to visit, study, find employment, and establish relationships. Intercultural couples, and multicultural families, are burgeoning, adding to the increasing diversity of society and of clientele.
