Luciano L’Abate, Ph.D. (1928–2016)
Introduction
Luciano L’Abate was one of the most important individuals in contemporary psychology due to his contributions to the general field of family therapy and interactive therapy. He was a pioneer of distance treatments. L’Abate authored more than 55 books translated in 10 languages and more than 300 papers published in prestigious professional journals.
Career
L’Abate received his Ph.D. in psychology from Duke University in 1956 which he followed with a postdoctoral fellowship at the Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago. He started his didactic career as an Assistant Professor at Washington University School of Medicine (1959–1964) and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Emory University (1964–1965). He went on to teach at Georgia State University, where he founded the first Ph.D. program in Family Psychology. He retired there as Professor Emeritus in 1990.
