Introduction
Structural family therapy (SFT) developed out of the perception that individuals are best treated within the context of the family therapy environment (Henderson and Thompson 2016). Salvador Minuchin (1974), considered the founder of structural family therapy, established concepts highly related to Bowen’s family systems theory, and early in his professional experience he practiced with methods connected with Adlerian family therapy (Henderson and Thompson 2016). Minuchin introduced a highly directive and interactive approach to engaging the family context by exploring the family structure to find resolution to the presenting issues in therapy. SFT is a method that addresses changes and hierarchies that occur within a developing family structure. Rules and behavior patterns that affect the interactions become revealed as individuals within the family system grow and develop greater autonomy.
