Integrative Couple Therapy: The Functional Analytic Approach

Introduction

A recent contribution from the “third wave” of behavioral therapies, the Functional Analytic approach to Integrative Couple Therapy is an application of Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) to the treatment of couples’ distress. While traditional behavior therapists might take a “one-size-fits-all” approach, shaping partners’ behaviors according to the characteristics of an ideal relationship, third-wave behavioral couples therapies view behaviors in context, tailoring therapy to each client’s particular situation. In many ways, FAP-enhanced couples therapy resembles the more widely known Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy (IBCT) with three main differences: (1) an underlying theory derived from an individual psychotherapy model (Kohlenberg and Tsai 1991); (2) greater focus on assessing and treating behaviors that occur in-session; and (3) the model’s tremendous flexibility, which represents...
