Introduction
Intergenerational family therapy is a category of family therapy models that highlight the importance of family of origin and early life experiences in understanding any individual, couple, or family. These family therapy models tend to emphasize therapists’ own awareness of how their own family of origin experiences impact them as a person and a therapist. The most widely recognized intergenerational family therapy models are Bowen Family Systems Theory, Contextual Therapy, Intergenerational Family Therapy, and Object Relations Therapy. This entry will serve as an overview of each of these theoretical models.
