Introduction

Dr. Carmen Knudson-Martin grew up on a farm in North Dakota, the daughter of Scandinavian parents, and the first in her family to attend college. Today she is recognized as a leader in the expansion of our current understanding of Marriage and Family Therapy as a contextually relevant mental health field. She self-identifies as a white, monogamous, cisgender, heterosexual, temporarily able-bodied wife, mother, and grandmother committed to promoting equitable relationships through her teaching, writing, and clinical work.

Career

Dr. Knudson-Martin began her career teaching family life education in US high schools and then at international schools in Iran, Senegal, Jordan, and Costa Rica. These experiences piqued her curiosity in systemic dynamics and required her to consider relational interactions from perspectives that were different from her own.
