Abstract

Optimizing kidney retrieval and preservation are essential to ensure that high-quality organs are available for transplantation to an ever-growing population of patients waiting for them. Key components of the retrieval process include the clear establishment of brain death in the donor (for donations after brain death), the complete evaluation of donor criteria to ensure targeting of organs to appropriate recipient populations, careful operative recovery to optimize technical surgical success of the organs, and the judicious use of preservation techniques to maximize graft survival.
