Definition

The term secularization designates a process of cultural transformation that begins timidly in the so-called Renaissance and extends throughout the modern time. It implies the progressive autonomization of civil society and state institutions regarding the hegemony of the Christian religion over the whole life of society.

What Is Secularism?

The secularism of the state takes place through the legal provisions of the separation of the state and the different religious, agnostic or atheistic institutions, and the neutrality of the state with regard to the different options of private conscience. Secularism can be defined as a social regime of coexistence, whose political institutions are legitimized by popular sovereignty and not by religious elements.
