Definition
Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus (IURD) [hereafter UCKG – Universal Church of the Kingdom of God] is a Brazilian New Pentecostal denomination with its headquarters at the Temple of Solomon in São Paulo, Brazil. It was founded on July 9, 1977, by three Brazilian evangelists, Romildo Ribeiro Soares, Edir Bezerra Macedo, and Roberto Augusto Lopes. A few years later, in a kind of coup d’etat against Soares, Macedo took over the leadership of UCKG to become its presiding bishop and the chief executive. Under his personal power, UCKG has become the largest Brazilian New Pentecostal church, present today in numerous countries of the six continents.
