Definition
The Assemblies of God is a Pentecostal denomination which began in Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1914. It is currently headquartered in Springfield, Missouri, and has offices in 212 countries. The Assemblies of God is the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination claiming 67.5 million adherents, 30 million in Latin America alone (Wilkie 2016).
As a part of the broader Pentecostal and Renewal movements, the denomination places a heavy emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit and the manifestation of spiritual gifts. Tongues are the foundation of the spiritual gifts and are seen as the initial evidence of spirit baptism. Testimonies of healings, visions, and prophecies are common in church events.
