Judaism in Argentina covers one of the most extensive Jewish histories and largest communities currently living in Latin America.

Introduction

Judaism’s story in Argentina stretches far back into the sixteenth century and today comprises the largest population of Jews in Latin America. This narrative is also weaved together with European and Middle Eastern stories and institutions that came to shape Jewish life in Argentina in significant ways. This entry is an overview of these narratives over time and in brief detail.

History of Judaism in Argentina: Colonial Era

Following the expulsion of Jews from Spain and in the wake of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions, Jews immigrated alongside colonizers and explorers to settle in the Argentine territories of the Spanish American empire.
