Definition

The Third General Conference of Latin American and Caribbean Bishops, or the Puebla Conference, or CELAM III, was convened by Pope John Paul II (1978–2005) from January 27 to February 13, 1979, in Puebla de los Angeles, Mexico, under the theme: “Evangelization in the present and future of Latin America” (Jun Pablo II 1979). Three hundred and fifty six delegates participated, although 249 were originally planned, 221 of whom were bishops.

Introduction

At the end of 1976, during the XVI Assembly of CELAM held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Cardinal Sebastian Baggio, then prefect of the Congregation for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, announced that Pope Paul VI (1963–1978) intended to convene CELAM III (Saranyana 2002: 138; Doig 1993; López Trujillo 1980).
