Abstract

To understand the present-day Slovenian school system, it is necessary to be aware of the geographic, historic, and political circumstances surrounding its development. Slovenia covers an area of 20,000 km2 and has a population of two million. Its capital is Ljubljana. It only became an independent state in 1991: for centuries – until 1918 – Slovenia lived under German or Austrian rule. From 1918 to 1991, Slovenia was part of the state of Yugoslavia. After World War II until 1990, a communist regime ruled Slovenia. The last big changes in the education system took place in Yugoslavia in 1958 at the behest of the Communist Party. All this time Slovenia was never allowed an independent education system.
