Theory and Application

The Acceleration, Reconnection, Turbulence, and Electrodynamics of the Moon’s Interaction with the Sun (ARTEMIS) mission began its life as the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) mission. THEMIS was a five-spacecraft magnetospheric study mission flown in high elliptical orbit (HEO) as part of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate’s (SMD) Explorer program. After THEMIS’ primary mission was completed (three spacecraft are still being used for a similar extended effort), two of the spacecraft were repurposed into the ARTEMIS mission to perform related studies near the Moon. To accomplish this mission shift, the two spacecraft were transferred first into libration point orbits (LPOs) in the Earth–Moon (EM) system (L1 and L2) and then eventually into low lunar orbit (LLO). Having continued its mission successfully and demonstrated the feasibility of this trajectory/orbit, ARTEMIS provides an excellent template for future cislunar...
