Abstract

We have a large amount of documents concerning Albrecht Dürer, one of Renaissance Europe’s most important artists, an amount which is much more significant than that concerning any other German artist of the time and comparable to the amount available about Italy’s great masters of his time, such as Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo. Engraver, painter, and art theorist, Dürer has left us about a thousand drawings, as well as about 300 prints, a little less than 200 paintings, three amply illustrated treatises on art theory and a large body of theoretical studies more or less linked to the drafting of these treatises.
